The staff and students were delighted to welcome Chelmsford MP Vicky Ford to Thriftwood College on Thursday 27th September for a question and answer session with College members. Following on from a chance meeting at Westminster with learners in the Summer Term, Ms Ford committed to visiting the College. She was happy to engage with thoughtful questions from a number of students. The queries raised, involved many current issues including; traffic problems caused by the closure of the Army and Navy flyover, student bus passes and more philosophical debate about Donald Trump, women in politics and wider challenges across the globe.
Learners engaged with great maturity and interest and were keen to follow up some of Vicky’s suggestions and put their questions and views in writing. Her mantra of, ‘keep fighting and join together’ resonated with the values of the College and students showed their appreciation with warm applause. Mr Andrew Copland who organised the visit and teaches aspects of Politics and Economics to the young people, felt that the visit was important in showing students’ engagement with the political arena, particularly in matters directly relating to them. This event has certainly inspired the students to get involved in local issues.
